How the days are chosen

The rules favour a Moon in a warm sign, Venus and Jupiter in easy aspect to your Sun, Moon, Venus or Ascendant, and count a Venus retrograde against it.

Every day of the next 30 days gets points from fixed rules for your event. Some come from the sky and are the same for everyone: the Moon waxing or waning, the Moon void of course, Mercury or Venus retrograde, eclipses, and the Moon’s sign. Some come from your own chart: whether Venus or Jupiter make an easy aspect, or Mars or Saturn a hard one, to your natal Sun, Moon, Venus or Ascendant.

The days with the most points are your best days, the ones with the fewest are the days to avoid, and each comes with the main reasons. Electional astrology is a traditional practice, not tested science. Use it as one input next to your own judgement, and never to time a medical, legal or safety decision.

The rules, in the open

Points per day for each event. A blank factor does not count for that event.

First date

  • Favoured Moon signs: Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Pisces
  • Unfavoured Moon signs: Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius
  • Waxing Moon: +1
  • Dark days before the New Moon: −1
  • Moon void of course for 6 hours or more: −2
  • Venus retrograde: −3
  • Eclipse within a day: −1
  • Moon in a favoured sign (the same amount less in an unfavoured one): +2 / −2
  • Venus or Jupiter in an easy aspect to your natal Sun, Moon, Venus or Ascendant: +4
  • Mars or Saturn in a hard aspect to those points: −3

Days are UTC calendar days and the Moon’s sign is the one at noon UTC. Without a birth time your Ascendant is left out, and your Moon too when its sign is uncertain.

Questions

Asked often

How are the best days chosen?

Each day gets points from fixed rules for your event: the Moon waxing or waning, a void-of-course Moon, Mercury and Venus retrograde, eclipses, the Moon’s sign and Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Saturn against your own Sun, Moon, Venus and Ascendant. The days with the most points are the best. The rules are printed on this page.

Does it use my birth chart?

Yes. The Moon and the retrogrades are the same for everyone, but the transits are read against your natal Sun, Moon, Venus and Ascendant, so two people get different lists. Without a birth time the Ascendant is left out.

Does electional astrology work?

It is a traditional practice that picks start dates by the sky. The positions are exact astronomy; whether they influence outcomes has not been shown by tests. Treat it as one input beside your own judgement, and do not use it for medical, legal or safety decisions.

What do I get for free and what is in the full list?

The free list covers the next 30 days with your 3 best and 3 worst days. The Astrology plan and All Access show the full 90 days, with up to 10 best and 5 worst days.

What if there is no good day?

Then no day in the window stands out for your event. Waiting a couple of weeks usually changes that. A neutral day with no strong factor against it is still fine for most things.
