Rising sign calculator
Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. It moves through all twelve signs in a day, so this one depends on your birth time more than anything else in the chart.
- AscendantThe Rising sign and its exact degree for your birth minute and place.
- House cuspsAll twelve house cusps, starting from the Ascendant.
- MidheavenThe MC, the highest point of the zodiac at your birth.
- Sun & MoonYour full big three, plus every planet and aspect.
How it’s calculated
The Ascendant is where the ecliptic meets the eastern horizon. To find it we need the exact moment (your local time converted to UTC with the IANA zone history of your birth city) and the city’s latitude and longitude.
From those we work out the local sidereal time and the obliquity of the ecliptic, then the Ascendant, Midheaven and Placidus house cusps. Our code is tested against Swiss Ephemeris.
A sign rises in about two hours on average, though at mid-latitudes some signs take under an hour and others three or more. Every four minutes of clock time moves the Ascendant roughly one degree.
Asked often
Can I calculate my Rising sign without a birth time?
No. The Ascendant goes through every sign in about 24 hours, so without the time any of the twelve is possible. Without a time we show the planets and aspects and leave the Rising sign out rather than guess.
How exact does my birth time need to be?
Within 10–15 minutes is usually enough for the sign. If your Ascendant comes out in the first or last couple of degrees of a sign, a few minutes either way can change it, and it’s worth finding a more exact record.
What does the Rising sign mean?
In astrology the Ascendant is read as your manner and first impression: how you meet new situations and how people see you before they know you. It also sets where the twelve houses begin.
Why does my Rising sign differ between websites?
Usually the time zone or daylight-saving time used for your birth date, or a different city picked from the list. We convert with the IANA time-zone history of the exact city you choose. A different house system doesn’t change the Ascendant itself.
What if I was born far north?
Above the polar circles some signs never rise at certain times of year and Placidus houses can’t be calculated. The Ascendant is still shown; the houses switch to whole-sign and the chart says so.
Your houses, written out
With a birth time, the natal chart book includes a chapter on your twelve houses, starting from your Ascendant. Or put the chart on the wall as a poster.
