How it’s calculated
Mercury is the fastest planet after the Moon: it can cross a sign in under two weeks, or stay for two months around a retrograde. It turns retrograde three or four times a year for about three weeks each time.
We compute Mercury’s apparent position with our own ephemeris code, tested against Swiss Ephemeris, and check every hour of your birth date in every time zone on Earth (UTC−12 to UTC+14) to see whether the date alone settles the sign.
If Mercury changed sign inside that window, the result shows both signs and the exact moment; with your birth time and city we tell you which one is yours, converting with your city’s historical time zone.

Is my Mercury sign usually my Sun sign?
Often. Mercury never gets more than about 28° from the Sun, so your Mercury sign is your Sun sign or the sign just before or after it. A bit over half of people have Mercury in their Sun sign.
What does it mean to be born during Mercury retrograde?
Astrologers read a natal Mercury retrograde as a mind that reviews and revisits: you may think things through on your own before speaking, and come back to ideas others have dropped. About one person in five has it.
Do I need my birth time?
Only on the days Mercury changed sign. The calculator checks your whole birth date in every time zone and asks for the time and city only when it changed sign during it.
