North Node in Aries
You grow by acting on what you want, deciding without a vote and tolerating a little conflict. The South Node in Libra is the habit of waiting for others to choose first.
Your North Node sign is the sign the Moon’s ascending node was in on the day you were born. It spends about eighteen months in each sign, so your birth date is nearly always enough. You get your North Node, your South Node and what the pair points to.
This free calculator finds your North Node sign, and the South Node opposite it, from your date of birth, with no sign-up. The node spends about eighteen months in a sign, so your birth time and city are needed only if it changed sign on your birthday. We use the mean node, the standard in most astrology software.
The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s path across the sky, the ecliptic. The North Node is where the Moon climbs north of it. The nodes move backwards through the zodiac, taking 18.6 years for the full circle.
We calculate the mean node with the standard series in Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms (chapter 47). The true node wobbles up to about 1.5° either side of it, and most astrologers and most software use the mean node by default, so we do too.
To decide whether the date alone is enough, we check every hour of your birth date in every time zone on Earth, from UTC−12 to UTC+14. If the node changed sign in that window, you see both signs and the moment of the change, and the time and city settle it.
A short reading for each sign. Find yours above, or read across for a friend.

In Western astrology the North Node points to what you are growing toward: the qualities that feel unfamiliar at first and become more rewarding the more you practise them. It is read as direction rather than as a trait you already have.
It is always in the sign opposite the North Node. Astrologers read it as what comes easily and is overused: the habits and strengths you already have and can lean on too much.
The mean node moves smoothly backwards. The true node follows the Moon’s actual orbit and swings around the mean one by up to about 1.5°. The two share a sign almost always, and differ only when the node is within a degree or two of a sign boundary.
Almost never. The node changes sign about every eighteen months, so only a few birth dates a year are close to a change. The calculator tells you when yours is one of them.
Roughly every eighteen months, moving backwards through the zodiac, for example from Aries to Pisces. It returns to the same sign every 18.6 years, which is the nodal cycle eclipse astrologers follow.
The natal chart book reads your nodes with the rest of your chart: planets, houses and aspects. Seen with your Sun, Moon and Rising sign, the North Node makes more sense.
