Venus sign calculator

Venus is the planet of what you love and how you love: taste, affection, attraction, the way you make peace. It changes sign every few weeks, so your birthday alone usually tells us where it was.

How it’s calculated

Venus moves through the zodiac at roughly a degree a day, so it usually spends four to five weeks in a sign. About every eighteen months it turns retrograde for six weeks, and then it can stay in one sign for up to four months.

We compute where Venus stood with our own ephemeris code, built on the open-source astronomy-engine library and tested against Swiss Ephemeris. Your date alone pins it down unless Venus crossed into a new sign within a day or so of your birth. To be safe we check every hour of your birthday in every time zone on Earth, from UTC−12 to UTC+14.

If the sign is the same across that whole window, the answer is certain. If Venus changed sign inside it, we show both signs and the exact moment of the change, and ask for your birth time and city to settle it. With a city, the time of the change is shown in your local time, daylight saving included.

Questions

Asked often

What does my Venus sign mean?

Astrologers read Venus as what you find beautiful and how you show affection: what draws you to people, what makes you feel cared for, how you handle money and pleasure. The sign colours that style; Venus in Aries falls for people quickly, Venus in Capricorn takes its time and builds.

Is my Venus sign the same as my Sun sign?

Often, but not always. Venus never moves more than about 47° from the Sun, so your Venus sign is either your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it. Roughly a third of people share their Sun and Venus sign.

Do I need my birth time?

Usually not. Venus moves about a degree a day, so it changes sign only every few weeks. On the handful of days a year when it changes sign, the time and city decide which sign it was; the calculator tells you when that’s the case.

What if Venus was retrograde when I was born?

A retrograde Venus is read as love and values turned inward: slower to trust, more reflective about what really matters. It is not a bad sign; roughly one person in fourteen has it.

How is Venus different from Mars in a chart?

Venus describes what you are drawn to and how you receive and give affection; Mars describes how you go after what you want, desire and drive. Reading the two together is a classic first step in comparing two charts.
