January 20 zodiac sign
January 20 is the classic changeover date: in most years the Sun has just entered Aquarius at 0°, while in others it is still on the final degree of Capricorn.
- Sun at 0°–2° Aquarius
- 1st decan · Saturn (modern: Uranus)
- Cusp birthday
January 20 in profile
This date sits right on the border. Usually the Sun reaches 0° Aquarius during the day, the very first degree of the sign, where Saturn rules both the sign and its first decan (modern astrologers add Uranus). In some years it stays on the last degree of Capricorn, the anaretic 29°, until after midnight. There is no cusp sign in between: a January 20 person is one or the other, and the year and time decide it. Either way, the shared Saturn thread gives seriousness, self-reliance and a long memory.
At home they want order and room to breathe. The Capricorn version keeps the house running like a small firm; the Aquarius version prefers a home open to friends, with a spare mattress and an odd collection on the wall. Both care about family in a dutiful way and dislike emotional scenes. They often become the relative who organises the reunion and then stands slightly apart, watching it unfold.
Communication is direct and factual. They explain rather than persuade, and share opinions frankly even when it costs a little goodwill. Group chats get thoughtful, slightly delayed replies. They argue from principles and appreciate it when others do the same. Adding a word of feeling to the facts helps, since relatives can mistake their clarity for coldness.
Capricorn or Aquarius?
The Sun moves from Capricorn into Aquarius around January 20, and the exact moment shifts from year to year. Between 1930 and 2040 it happened during the UTC day of January 20 in 91 years out of 111, at a median of 11:53 UTC (11:01 UTC in births from 1980 to 2010). In 10 years the whole day was still Capricorn. In 10 years it was already Aquarius all day. So a January 20 birthday is Capricorn or Aquarius depending on the year and the time, never a blend of the two.

Your Moon sign depends on the year
The Sun is in the same place on January 20 every year; the Moon is not. It changes sign every two and a half days, so people who share this birthday can have any of the twelve Moon signs. Here is where it was on January 20 in recent years, from 00:00 to 23:59 UTC (an arrow means it changed sign during the day).

Compatible signs for an Aquarius
Sun-sign compatibility starts from the element. Aquarius gets on most easily with its own element and with the two sextile signs, and feels the strongest pull from its opposite. The full charts decide how a real pairing feels.
A gift for a January 20 birthday
A household object with an inventive twist, such as a well-designed home weather station or an indoor herb-growing kit, useful enough for Capricorn and novel enough for Aquarius.
Asked about January 20
What zodiac sign is January 20?
January 20 can be Capricorn or Aquarius. The Sun changed from Capricorn to Aquarius during this date in 91 of the 111 years from 1930 to 2040, so the answer depends on the birth year, time and place. The year-by-year list above shows when; a birth chart gives the exact answer.
Is January 20 a cusp birthday?
Yes. January 20 is one of the days the Sun leaves Capricorn for Aquarius. People call it the Capricorn–Aquarius cusp, but there is no blended sign: someone born before the change is Capricorn, after it Aquarius.
What decan is January 20?
January 20 falls in the 1st decan of Aquarius. In the triplicity system we use, that decan belongs to Aquarius and its ruler Saturn (modern: Uranus), which colours the Aquarius Sun with a little of Aquarius.
Your birthday is only the Sun
A January 20 birthday tells you where the Sun was. The Moon, the Rising sign and eight more planets each sit somewhere of their own, and they depend on the year, the hour and the place. The free calculator shows all of them.
