Sextile in astrology

The sextile is a friendly 60° link between two planets. It offers help and openings, though they tend to stay quiet until you reach for them.

  • opportunity
  • cooperation
  • mild ease
  • effort rewarded

What is a sextile?

A sextile (⚹) forms when two planets are 60° apart, one sixth of the zodiac. It has the tightest orb of the five major aspects here: 5°, or 7° when the Sun or Moon is involved. A wide sextile can be faint, so it is worth checking how close yours is.

In most cases the planets sit two signs apart, which links fire with air or earth with water. Aries and Gemini, Leo and Libra, Taurus and Cancer, Virgo and Scorpio all pair this way. These elements get on well: air feeds fire, water softens earth. The signs differ enough to bring something new to each other and are similar enough to cooperate without fuss.

Tradition counts the sextile as a soft aspect, a lesser cousin of the trine. Modern astrologers often describe it as an opportunity. The trine hands you a talent; the sextile shows you a door and leaves the walking to you.

How it shows up

Sextiles tend to show up as useful connections between parts of life. Mercury sextile Venus can make someone good at the kind thank-you note or the tactful email. Mars sextile Jupiter often gives energy for sport, travel or a side project that grows. Moon sextile Mercury lets a person talk about feelings without falling apart, which friends notice at two in the morning.

Because the help is mild, it is easy to leave unused. A person with Venus sextile Saturn may have a real knack for building steady relationships and still drift through years of casual ones. Once they commit, the skill comes through quickly. Sextiles reward practice, learning and saying yes to the offer when it arrives.

Gifts

  • Different parts of the personality cooperate, so skills combine in practical ways.
  • Small efforts in the area of the sextile tend to bring visible results.
  • People with several sextiles often find the right contact at the right time.
  • Learning tends to come quickly, because the two planets already speak a compatible language.

Pitfalls

  • The ease is quiet enough to go unnoticed for years.
  • A sextile rarely forces action, so it can stay a nice idea that never starts.
  • Wide sextiles near the 5° limit may barely register in daily life.
  • A chart with many sextiles and few squares can drift pleasantly without a clear direction.

How to read a sextile

Name both planets and ask what each could lend the other. Tight sextiles, within a degree or two, read almost like trines in strength. Note the two signs (fire with air, or earth with water) and the houses, which show where the opportunity tends to appear. A sextile to the Sun, the Moon or your chart ruler carries more weight than one between two slow planets. Then ask a practical question: when did you last use this link, and what happened?

Sextiles also matter as supporting players. A planet under strain from a square often has a sextile from somewhere else, and that sextile tends to show the most workable way out. If Mars squares Saturn but Venus sextiles Mars, charm and cooperation may get done what force could not.

Questions

Asked about the sextile

Which is stronger, trine or sextile?

The trine is usually considered stronger. It links signs of the same element and has a wider orb, while the sextile links compatible elements and is more modest. A very tight sextile can still outweigh a loose trine.

Is a sextile a good aspect?

It is one of the two soft aspects and generally helpful. Its benefits tend to appear when you put effort in, so it works more like an invitation than a guarantee.

Can a sextile be out of sign?

Yes. Planets near the edge of a sign can be 60° apart while sitting one or three signs apart, for example 29° Aries and 1° Cancer. The link holds, but the usual easy pairing of elements is missing, so it feels less smooth.
