Opposition in astrology
An opposition places two planets on opposite sides of the zodiac, facing each other. Life with one tends to swing between two poles until the person learns to hold both.

What is a opposition?
An opposition (☍) forms when two planets are 180° apart. On this site it counts within 8° of exact, extended to 10° when the Sun or Moon is one of the planets.
Opposed planets normally sit in opposite signs: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. These pairs share a modality and pair complementary elements, fire with air and earth with water. Each sign has what the other lacks. Aries acts for itself and Libra considers the other person; Cancer looks after the family and Capricorn after the wider world.
Tradition counts the opposition among the hard aspects, with the square. Modern astrology sees it as an aspect of awareness: you meet both ends of a spectrum, so you can learn where the middle is. Many astrologers note that one side is often projected onto other people, so the opposition shows up first in relationships.
How it shows up
Oppositions tend to feel like a see-saw. Moon opposite Mars may swing between needing comfort and picking a fight, sometimes within one evening. Venus opposite Uranus can want closeness and freedom in turn, so partners never quite know which version will turn up. Mercury opposite Jupiter might jump from small detail to grand theory and back again in a single meeting.
Projection is common. A person with Sun opposite Saturn may keep running into strict bosses before seeing the critic inside. Someone with Venus opposite Pluto may meet a string of intense, controlling partners. Once the pattern is recognised, the opposition can give a rare ability to see both sides of a question and to mediate between people who disagree.
Gifts
- Oppositions build awareness of contrasting viewpoints and the ability to weigh them.
- Relationships act as a clear mirror, which can speed up self-knowledge.
- Learning to balance two needs often produces mature judgement.
- People with strong oppositions often make fair negotiators, mediators and counsellors.
Pitfalls
- Swinging between extremes can look inconsistent to others.
- Projecting one side onto partners or colleagues can repeat the same conflict with different people.
- Indecision is likely when both options feel equally necessary.
- Giving up one side entirely tends to bring it back later in a sharper form.
How to read a opposition
Look at both ends and give them equal weight. The orb shows how sharp the polarity is: within 2° the tension shapes daily life, while wider oppositions come and go. The sign pair names the axis, such as self and other, or security and change. Houses often show the life areas in tug of war, for example home and career across the fourth and tenth. Oppositions involving the Sun, the Moon or the chart ruler, or lying along the horizon or meridian, carry the most weight.
A useful exercise is to list what each planet wants in plain words and then look for a life that makes room for both. With Moon opposite Saturn, that might mean a demanding career plus one evening a week that is protected for family. The answer is rarely a compromise down the middle; it is usually a rhythm that gives each side its turn.

Asked about the opposition
Is an opposition aspect bad?
It is challenging, but it is also an aspect of awareness. Oppositions show where you need to find balance, and people often grow most through the relationships that bring them to light.
What is the difference between an opposition and a conjunction?
A conjunction fuses two planets into one force in one area of the chart. An opposition separates them to opposite sides, so they pull against each other and need conscious balancing.
Do opposition aspects affect relationships?
Often, yes. Many astrologers find that one side of an opposition is projected onto other people, so partners and close colleagues tend to carry that energy until you recognise it as your own.
