December 1 zodiac sign
December 1 places the Sun at about 9° Sagittarius, the closing degree of the first decan, where Jupiter rules both sign and sub-sign and the archer’s appetite for open horizons runs unchecked.

December 1 in profile
This is Sagittarius close to its raw source. The first decan is Sagittarius twice over, so Jupiter acts as ruler and sub-ruler, and the result is optimism with very little brake. At 9° the sign is still early and emphatic, though in some years the Sun has already crossed into the Mars-ruled second decan, adding an edge. The Sun also lies close to Antares on this date: traditional astrology calls it the watcher of the west and links it with daring, sometimes reckless daring.
Friends of a December 1 Sagittarius get invited to things they did not know they wanted: a lecture on volcanoes, a midnight ferry, a stranger’s barbecue. They gather people from every corner and introduce them loudly. Honesty comes with the friendship, so a bad haircut gets named within a minute. Most friends learn to value it, because the same voice is the first to praise.
Curiosity runs wide rather than deep. A tab left open on Persian grammar sits next to one on sailing knots, and both get full attention for a fortnight. They learn fastest by asking experts awkward questions at parties. Choosing one subject a year to finish properly is the habit that pays, so the Jupiter appetite produces something solid as well as a long reading list.
Sagittarius all day
In every year from 1930 to 2040 the Sun was in Sagittarius for the whole of December 1, in every time zone. This is not a cusp birthday: the nearest changes of sign fall around November 23 and December 21.
Your Moon sign depends on the year
The Sun is in the same place on December 1 every year; the Moon is not. It changes sign every two and a half days, so people who share this birthday can have any of the twelve Moon signs. Here is where it was on December 1 in recent years, from 00:00 to 23:59 UTC (an arrow means it changed sign during the day).

Compatible signs for a Sagittarius
Sun-sign compatibility starts from the element. Sagittarius gets on most easily with its own element and with the two sextile signs, and feels the strongest pull from its opposite. The full charts decide how a real pairing feels.
A gift for a December 1 birthday
A short course in something wildly unrelated to their job, such as astronomy, flamenco or beekeeping, booked with a friend so the first session feels like an outing.
Asked about December 1
What zodiac sign is December 1?
December 1 is Sagittarius in every year: the Sun is at about 7°–11° Sagittarius that day, in the sign’s 1st decan.
Is December 1 a cusp birthday?
No. The Sun is well inside Sagittarius on December 1. The cusp days, when the Sun changes sign, fall around November 23 and December 21. Astrology has no blended cusp signs anyway: at any moment the Sun is in one sign.
What decan is December 1?
December 1 falls in the 1st decan of Sagittarius. In the triplicity system we use, that decan belongs to Sagittarius and its ruler Jupiter, which colours the Sagittarius Sun with a little of Sagittarius. In some years the Sun crosses into the next decan during the day.
Your birthday is only the Sun
A December 1 birthday tells you where the Sun was. The Moon, the Rising sign and eight more planets each sit somewhere of their own, and they depend on the year, the hour and the place. The free calculator shows all of them.
