Personality and temperament
Cancer notices how everyone is feeling before they say a word. Walk into a Cancer’s kitchen after a bad day and there will be a cup of tea in your hand before you have finished the first sentence. Cardinal water makes the sign take the lead in emotional matters: it starts the family group chat, organises the reunion, rings when you have gone quiet. Care is how Cancer acts on the world.
The Moon rules the sign, and Cancer people often have moods that rise and fall like tides, cheerful in the morning and withdrawn by evening without an obvious cause. Memory runs deep: old photographs, a grandparent’s recipe, the hurtful comment from five years ago. Jupiter is exalted here, which tradition reads as generosity toward one’s own people. Under the soft manner sits a tough protective instinct, and threatening a Cancer’s family is a serious mistake.
The shell is both defence and trap. A hurt Cancer retreats, goes quiet and expects others to guess what went wrong, and sulking can replace an honest conversation. Capricorn, the opposite sign, models the missing skill: structure, plain speech and a tolerance for the outside world. A Cancer who learns to say what they need out loud keeps all the tenderness and loses much of the hurt.
