The 10th house in astrology
Your job title, your name in a search result, the way your industry talks about you and the award you would quietly love to win all sit in the 10th house, the most public part of the chart.

- reputation

What it means
Medium coeli, the Midheaven or MC, is the highest point the zodiac reached in the sky at your birth, and the 10th house begins there. Traditionally it is the house of action, honour and rank: what a person does and is known for. It was the strongest of the angles for worldly matters, and planets near it were seen as signs of a life lived in view of others.
Modern astrology reads the 10th as career and vocation, the role you play in society and how you relate to authority, both above you and in yourself. It also describes one parent, usually the one linked with ambition and the outside world, and the expectations you grew up with.
In practice, read the sign on the Midheaven, any planets in the 10th and the ruler of the MC to understand your public direction. The 10th is not only paid work: a parent known in the community, a volunteer who chairs every committee, or an artist with a small loyal following are all living their 10th house.
The life areas
You meet the 10th house in performance reviews, promotions, job interviews and online profiles, in the first time someone calls you an expert, and in the reputation that arrives at a new job before you do. It covers bosses, governments, institutions and anyone who holds authority over your public life. It also covers the legacy you hope to leave, the work you want to be remembered for. When transits cross the Midheaven, people often change career, take on a senior role, become visible in a new way, or decide the old ladder is no longer worth climbing.
Natural sign and ruler
Capricorn is the natural sign of the 10th house and Saturn its natural ruler, which ties the house to structure, responsibility and patient achievement. In your own chart the Midheaven may fall in any sign. With Pisces on the MC, Jupiter and Neptune rule it, and a career in the arts, healing or a caring profession is a common thread. If Jupiter sits in the 4th house, that work may be done from home or within a family business.
Angular house
The 10th house is angular, and its cusp is the Midheaven, one of the four angles. Angular houses are the most active and visible, and the 10th is the most public of them all. A planet here, especially one within a few degrees of the MC, tends to show in your work and in how others see you. Traditional astrologers saw planets in the 10th as raised up, with the power to act in the world.
Planets in the 10th house
The ten planets below each take a different route to public life. Saturn is comfortable in the 10th, in the house of its own sign Capricorn, and builds a career slowly and solidly. The Sun is very strong here and seeks recognition. Jupiter brings opportunity and good standing, and Venus success through charm, art or work with people. Mars competes for position, Mercury builds a reputation through ideas, and the Moon can mean a career in the public eye or in caring for others, with changes along the way. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto describe unusual, inspired or powerful vocations.

An empty 10th house
Plenty of successful people have nothing in their 10th house. An empty 10th means career and reputation are shaped through the Midheaven sign and its ruler rather than by a planet sitting here. The house where the MC ruler falls is often the most useful clue: in the 3rd it points to writing or teaching, in the 7th to working with clients or a partner. Transits to the MC, especially by Saturn and Jupiter, mark the turning points.
Asked about the 10th house
What does the 10th house rule in astrology?
The 10th house rules career, reputation, public image, authority and ambition, and in many readings one parent. It begins at the Midheaven, the highest point of the chart.
Is the 10th house the same as the Midheaven?
The Midheaven is the cusp, or starting point, of the 10th house in the Placidus system we use. The house is the section that follows it and can contain planets. The MC sign and the 10th house planets are read together.
What if my 10th house is empty?
It does not mean a weak career. Read the sign on the Midheaven and where its ruler sits, and look at transits to the MC for important career moments.
Which planet is best in the 10th house?
Traditionally the Sun, Jupiter and Venus are considered fortunate in the 10th, and Saturn is strong as the natural ruler of the house. Any planet here becomes prominent, so its sign and aspects matter a great deal.
