The 2nd house in astrology

Your payslip, your favourite coat, the savings account you never touch and the things you would not sell at any price all sit in the 2nd house. It describes what you own and what you think you are worth.

  • money you earn
  • possessions
  • values
  • self-worth
  • spending habits
  • material security

What it means

Traditionally the 2nd house was the house of livelihood, and it described a person’s movable goods: money, livestock, tools, anything that could be carried, bought or sold. It follows the 1st house because a body needs resources to keep going.

Modern astrology widens the house to include values and self-worth. What you are willing to pay for says a lot about what matters to you, and the way you price your own time often mirrors how you feel about yourself. Someone who undercharges for years and then finally raises their rates is doing 2nd house work.

In a chart reading the 2nd house shows how money tends to arrive and how it tends to leave. It describes earning through your own effort and talent, which separates it from the 8th house, where money comes through other people: a partner, a bank, an inheritance. Planets here describe your attitude to security more than the size of your bank balance.

The life areas

The 2nd house appears every time you check your balance, decide whether to repair or replace, or feel the small comfort of a full fridge. It covers your relationship with objects: the person who keeps their grandmother’s rings in a drawer, the one who sells everything before each move, the collector of first editions or vinyl. It also covers practical talents you can earn from, such as a steady hand, a good ear or a head for numbers. When this house is active, people often change jobs for better pay, renegotiate a salary, start saving seriously for the first time, or have a clear-out that leaves them lighter.

Natural sign and ruler

Taurus is the natural sign of the 2nd house and Venus its natural ruler, which ties money to comfort, taste and the pleasure of owning good things. In your own chart the 2nd house cusp can fall in any sign, and its ruler shows where your earning is directed. With Gemini on the 2nd cusp, for example, Mercury rules the house: money may come from writing, selling or several small sources at once, and if Mercury sits in the 9th house the income could involve teaching, travel or publishing.

Succedent house

The 2nd house is succedent, one of the four houses that follow the angles and hold on to what they started. Succedent houses deal with resources and stability, so planets here tend to work slowly and accumulate. Saturn in the 2nd may save carefully over decades; Jupiter here tends to earn and spend generously. Planets in the 2nd are less visible to others than those in the 1st, but they shape the security you build behind the scenes.

Planets in the 2nd house

The ten planets below each give the 2nd house a different relationship with money and possessions. Venus is comfortable here, in the house of its own sign Taurus, and tends to earn through taste, beauty or people skills. The Moon links security to feelings, so a well-stocked cupboard really does calm it. Jupiter is generous in both directions. Mars earns through effort and can spend on impulse, while Saturn is cautious and often builds wealth late. Uranus brings irregular income, Neptune a vague or idealistic attitude to money, and Pluto a strong drive to control resources.

An empty 2nd house

Having nothing in your 2nd house does not mean a life short of money. It simply means no single planet is pulling your attention towards earning and owning, so finances are handled more as a practical matter than a theme of identity. Read the house through the sign on its cusp, which shows your spending style, and the ruler’s position, which shows where income comes from. Transiting Jupiter through the 2nd can coincide with a pay rise or a new source of income, and transiting Saturn with budgeting and building savings.

Questions

Asked about the 2nd house

What does the 2nd house represent in astrology?
