The 8th house in astrology
A joint bank account, a mortgage, a will, a night that changes how you see someone: these all belong to the 8th house, which deals with what you share with other people and what that sharing costs.
- shared money
- debt and tax
- inheritance
- intimacy and sex
- crisis and change
- other people’s resources
What it means
Coming straight after the 7th, the 8th house is the second house from it, and so traditionally it shows the partner’s money. From there it extends to all money that belongs to other people, including loans, mortgages, insurance, tax, investors and inheritance. Hellenistic astrologers linked it with death and called it the Idle Place, because it makes no aspect to the Ascendant. In modern practice death is read as one meaning among many, and the 8th house is never used to predict when or how anyone dies.
Modern astrology gives the 8th house the territory of intimacy and change. Sex belongs here as a merging of two people, along with trust, jealousy and the things we only tell one person. So do crises and what follows them: grief, debt, the breakdown of something that once worked, and the slow rebuilding after. Psychological astrology also places research, secrets and therapy here, anything that requires looking below the surface.
In a chart, the 8th house shows how you handle what is not entirely yours: a partner’s finances, a family estate, a client’s budget, another person’s trust. It also shows how you go through endings and what you learn from them.
The life areas
Day to day, the 8th house involves more paperwork than drama. It is filling in a tax return, setting up a pension, signing for a loan, sorting out a parent’s affairs, splitting bills with a partner and deciding whether to have a joint account. It covers jobs that handle other people’s money, such as banking, accounting, insurance and fundraising, and jobs that work with crisis, from counselling to emergency services. It also covers private life at its most intimate, and the conversations about money, sex and trust that couples often put off.
Natural sign and ruler
Scorpio is the natural sign of the 8th house. Its traditional ruler is Mars and its modern ruler Pluto, and many astrologers read both. In your chart the 8th cusp can hold any sign. With Pisces there, the house is ruled by Jupiter traditionally and Neptune in modern practice, and shared money may be handled loosely or generously. If Jupiter sits in the 2nd house, what comes through partners or family can end up strengthening your own income.
Succedent house
The 8th house is succedent, which ties it to resources and to what lasts. Planets here work slowly and often out of sight, through money that builds over years, trust that takes time, and changes that happen in stages. Traditionally the 8th was a difficult place because it does not see the Ascendant, so planets here can feel hidden even from their owner and come through more clearly in times of change.
Planets in the 8th house
The list below covers every planet in the 8th house. Traditionally the benefics found this a harder place, so Venus and Jupiter here are read less as luxury and more as gain through partners, marriage or inheritance, and as warmth in difficult times. Mars, ruler of Scorpio, is strong and brings intense desire and courage in a crisis. Pluto, its modern ruler, adds depth and a gift for research. Saturn handles debt and obligation seriously, the Moon feels other people’s moods sharply, and the Sun and Mercury are drawn to what is hidden. Uranus brings sudden financial change and Neptune blurred boundaries around shared money.

An empty 8th house
If the 8th house holds no planets, you are not spared or denied anything in particular. Shared money, intimacy and change still come up in your life, as they do for everyone, and are read through the sign on the 8th cusp and the house where its ruler sits. Transits through the 8th, especially by Saturn or Pluto, are often linked with refinancing, inheritance matters or a period of personal change, and Jupiter with help from other people’s resources.
