The 7th house in astrology
The person you marry, the friend you open a business with and the rival who tells you to your face that you are wrong are all 7th house people. It describes the others you meet one to one.

What it means
The Descendant, the point that was setting on the western horizon when you were born, marks the start of the 7th house, directly opposite the Ascendant. Where the 1st house describes you, the 7th describes the people who sit across the table from you. Traditionally it rules marriage, partnerships of every kind, contracts, lawsuits and open enemies, meaning opponents whose identity is known, as opposed to the hidden ones of the 12th.
Modern astrology adds the idea of projection: qualities you have trouble owning tend to turn up in the people you choose. Someone with a reserved Ascendant may keep being drawn to loud, sociable partners, and gradually learn some of that ease through them. The 7th house describes the kind of partner you attract and the kind of partner you become.
In practice, read the sign on the Descendant, any planets in the 7th and the ruler of the house to understand your pattern in committed relationships. The same pattern often appears in business partnerships, with a lawyer or agent, and in a long-running professional rivalry.
The life areas
The 7th house turns up in wedding plans and divorce papers, in shared tenancy agreements, in the colleague you are always paired with on projects, and in the client you meet every week. It covers counsellors, agents, accountants and anyone you hire to act for you one to one. It also covers the public as a stream of individual strangers, which is why it matters to anyone in sales, consulting or therapy. When the 7th house is active by transit, people often marry, move in together, sign a major contract, end a partnership, or meet someone who changes their idea of what they want from another person.
Natural sign and ruler
Libra is the natural sign of the 7th house and Venus its natural ruler, linking the house with fairness, courtesy and the art of agreement. In your chart the Descendant is always the sign opposite your rising sign, so someone with Aries rising has Libra on the 7th, and someone with Cancer rising has Capricorn there. With Capricorn on the Descendant, Saturn rules the 7th: partners may be older, serious or slow to commit. If that Saturn sits in the 10th house, a partner may be met through work or share public responsibilities.
Angular house
The 7th house is angular, and its cusp is the Descendant, one of the four angles. Angular houses are strong and outward, so planets in the 7th are easy to see in action, mostly through other people. A planet close to the Descendant is often one of the first things partners notice about you, or something they bring into your life. Strong 7th houses belong to people whose lives are shaped by significant relationships.
Planets in the 7th house
The ten placements below describe partners and partnership in very different ways. Venus is comfortable in the 7th, in the house of its own sign Libra, and tends to bring a graceful partner and a talent for diplomacy. Jupiter also does well here, often through generous partners or successful collaborations. The Moon seeks a partner who feels like home, and the Sun puts relationships at the centre of identity. Mars, in the house opposite its own Aries, can bring passionate but argumentative partnerships. Saturn often delays or deepens commitment, and Uranus, Neptune and Pluto describe unconventional, idealised or intense bonds.

An empty 7th house
An empty 7th house is one of the most common worries in astrology and one of the least justified. It does not mean you will stay single, and many long marriages belong to people with nothing in this house. Partnership is then read through the sign on the Descendant and the house its ruler occupies: a 7th house ruler in the 5th links commitment with romance and children, in the 11th with friendship. Transits over the Descendant, especially by Jupiter and Saturn, mark important relationship periods.
Asked about the 7th house

It does not mean you will not marry or have a lasting relationship. The sign on the Descendant and where its ruler sits describe your partnerships, and transits through the house show active times.
