The 1st house in astrology
The first thing people notice about you, before you have said much at all, belongs to the 1st house. It covers your body, your manner and the way you start things, from a new job to a Monday morning.

What it means
The 1st house begins at the Ascendant, the degree of the zodiac that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Every other house is counted from this point, which is why astrologers have long called the 1st the house of life. Traditionally it describes the body and its vitality, the outward character and the general direction a life takes.
Modern astrology adds the idea of a persona, the face you show in a room of strangers. Your Sun sign may describe what you are working towards, while the 1st house describes the way you walk in: brisk or careful, chatty or watchful.
In a real chart, read the rising sign first, then any planets in the 1st house, then the planet that rules the rising sign. Because the rising degree moves through all twelve signs in about a day, this is the most time-sensitive part of the chart: a birth time out by twenty minutes can change it.
The life areas
In daily life the 1st house shows up in small, repeated things. It is the speed at which you cross a road, the clothes you reach for without thinking, and whether you introduce yourself or wait to be introduced. It describes your physical constitution in broad strokes: build, stamina, the kind of exercise you actually stick with. It also covers beginnings of every sort, so people with a busy 1st house often find they are good at the first week of anything and have to work harder on what comes after.
Natural sign and ruler
The natural sign of the 1st house is Aries and its natural ruler is Mars, which suits a house about stepping forward and being seen. In your own chart the house takes the sign that was rising when you were born, and that sign’s ruler becomes your chart ruler, one of the most personal planets you have. Where the chart ruler sits shows where your attention naturally goes. Someone with Virgo rising has Mercury as chart ruler; if Mercury falls in the 10th house, a careful, observant manner goes straight into work and public life.
Angular house
The 1st house is angular, the first of the four angular houses, and its cusp is the Ascendant itself. Angular houses are the most visible and active places in a chart, and a planet here acts outwardly and shows early in life. The closer a planet is to the Ascendant degree, the more it colours the whole personality, so astrologers look carefully at anything within a few degrees of it.
Planets in the 1st house
Below you can read each of the ten planets in the 1st house. Mercury has its joy here in Hellenistic tradition, so a quick, talkative, curious manner sits comfortably in this house. Mars, ruler of Aries, also feels at home and makes a person direct and physically active. The Sun and Jupiter give presence and confidence. Saturn here can feel heavier, shy or formal in youth, though it often brings steadiness with age. Venus softens the manner, the Moon makes moods easy to read, and Uranus, Neptune and Pluto add an unusual, elusive or intense quality to the first impression.

An empty 1st house
Plenty of charts have no planets in the 1st house, and it does not mean a weak sense of self. The Ascendant is always there, so the rising sign still sets your manner and physical style. To read the house further, look at the chart ruler and the house it occupies, which shows where your sense of self is invested. Transits matter too: when Jupiter or Saturn crosses your Ascendant, the 1st house becomes very active for a while, often around changes in appearance, health habits or how you present yourself.
Asked about the 1st house
What does the 1st house rule in astrology?
The 1st house rules the self as others first meet it: your body, appearance, temperament and the way you begin things. It starts at the Ascendant, so it is closely tied to your rising sign.
Is the 1st house the same as the rising sign?
They are closely linked but not identical. The rising sign is the sign on the cusp of the 1st house, while the house itself is a section of the chart that can hold planets and sometimes part of a second sign.
What if my 1st house is empty?
It is common and says nothing about how strong a personality you have. Your rising sign and the planet that rules it describe the 1st house instead, and transits to the Ascendant switch it on at particular times.
Which planet is best in the 1st house?
Traditionally Mercury, which has its joy here, along with Jupiter and Venus, which give an easy manner. Mars is strong here too as the natural ruler of the house.
What’s in your 1st house?
Which planets sit in your 1st house, and which sign is on its cusp, depends on your exact birth time and place. The free calculator draws your houses (Placidus) with every planet in its house, its sign and degree.
