What Jupiter means

In a natal chart Jupiter is the planet of growth and meaning. Traditional astrologers called it the greater benefic, the planet of increase, and it still describes where you are generous, hopeful and willing to take a chance. It also covers the bigger questions: what you believe, which teachers and books change you, why you travel, and how you make sense of a bad year. Its shadow is the same instinct overdone. Too much food, too many promises, and a confidence that skips the small print.

Jupiter takes about twelve years to circle the zodiac, so it spends about a year in each sign. Everyone born within roughly the same twelve months shares your Jupiter sign, including a good part of your school year. The sign sets the flavour of how a whole age group reaches for more. What makes it yours is the house Jupiter falls in (the area of life where growth comes most easily) and the aspects it makes to your Sun, Moon, Rising sign and other planets.

Jupiter is at home in Sagittarius and Pisces and exalted in Cancer. It is in detriment in Gemini and Virgo, and in fall in Capricorn. Those dignities change the style of its generosity more than the amount of it. To find your Jupiter sign you only need your birth date; a birth time adds the house.
