Uranus in the signs

Uranus is the planet of sudden change, and its sign marks what your generation was born wanting to overturn. Here is what each of the twelve placements means, and how to tell whether it is loud in your own chart.

What Uranus means

Uranus is the planet of sudden change. In a natal chart it shows where you need freedom, where you break with what you were taught, and where flashes of insight or invention arrive without warning. It was the first planet found with a telescope, and astrologers have linked it ever since with revolution, technology and the urge to be different. In modern astrology it rules Aquarius.

Uranus takes about 84 years to circle the zodiac and spends about seven years in each sign. Everyone born in those seven years shares the placement, so its sign describes a generation more than an individual: what a cohort rebelled against, which new tools and ideas it grew up with, and which freedoms it fought for. Because the orbit is so long, most signs have had two Uranus cohorts within living memory, born roughly a lifetime apart, and comparing them is often revealing.

What makes Uranus personal is its position in your chart: the house it falls in, its aspects to your Sun, Moon, Ascendant and personal planets, and whether it sits close to one of the angles. A Uranus on the Ascendant or Midheaven can colour a whole personality. To find your Uranus sign you only need your birth date; to place it in a house or on an angle, you also need your birth time and place.
